Psalm 23: The Nature of God

The LORD: The Unity of God

“The LORD is my shepherd; I shall not want.” (Psalm 23:1, ESV)

The psalm begins with "The LORD"—a name that points directly to the divine unity. The term used here is YHWH (Yahweh), the covenant name of God that signifies His eternal, self-existent nature.

I Shall Not Want: Trusting in God’s Provision

The final part of the verse, “I shall not want,” is a declaration of trust in God’s provision.

A shepherd not only guides but also provides for his sheep. David expresses confidence that with the LORD as his Shepherd, he will lack nothing.

Jesus confirms this when He teaches:

"Do not be anxious, saying, ‘What shall we eat?’ or ‘What shall we drink?’ or ‘What shall we wear?’ … Your heavenly Father knows that you need them all."(Matthew 6:31-32)
