Psalm 38: Another Depression Episode – When Sin Weighs Heavy
In Psalm 38, David opens his heart again—but this time, he’s not being attacked from the outside. His distress comes from within. He is experiencing a low moment, and he knows exactly what’s causing it: his own sin.
• Verse 3: “… there is no soundness in my bones because of my sin.”
• Verse 4: “My guilt has overwhelmed me like a burden too heavy to bear.”
• Verse 5: “My wounds fester and are loathsome because of my sinful folly.”
David shows us something many avoid admitting: sin can impact our emotional and mental health. Guilt weighs heavy. Unconfessed sin festers like a wound, affecting not only our relationship with God but also our peace of mind.
Repentance Is the Remedy
• Verse 18: “I confess my iniquity; I am troubled by my sin.”
• Verse 22: “Come quickly to help me, my Lord and my Savior.”
David doesn’t remain in denial. He brings his sin into the light and calls out to God for healing and restoration.
Reflection
Are you feeling spiritually or emotionally weighed down? Is it possible that unconfessed sin is at the root? Sometimes we ignore the obvious consequences of our spiritual condition.
If this speaks to you, don’t carry the burden alone. Confess. Repent. Be restored. The Lord is not only your Savior—He is your Healer too.
“If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness.” — 1 John 1:9
