Thoughts and Feelings Out of Control

Psalm 13:2“How long must I wrestle with my thoughts and day after day have sorrow in my heart? How long will my enemy triumph over me?”

In this verse, David sees his own thoughts and emotions as enemies—overwhelming, relentless, and out of control. When our thoughts spiral, our emotions follow, leaving us restless and burdened.

Clearly, David was battling emotional and mental distress. But what do we do when our thoughts and feelings overwhelm us?

By the end of the Psalm, David makes two life-saving decisions:

  1. He chooses to trust in God's unfailing love (Verse 5).

  2. He resolves to praise God no matter what (Verse 6).

When emotions are unstable, faith and worship anchor us. Even when we don’t feel like it, choosing to trust and praise shifts our focus from our struggles to God’s unchanging faithfulness.
