Psalms and Johannine Epistles

Today, we begin reading the Psalms alongside the epistles of John.

1 John 1:6 – “If we claim to have fellowship with him and yet walk in the darkness, we lie and do not live out the truth.”
Psalm 1:1 – “Blessed is the one who does not walk in step with the wicked or stand in the way that sinners take or sit in the company of mockers.”

Both passages warn against the influence of bad company—the people we associate with, the content we consume, and the values we embrace.

John speaks about true fellowship with God, while the Psalmist provides practical guidance on how to walk in righteousness:

  • Walking in step with the wicked – Do we imitate the ways of nonbelievers?

  • Standing in the way of sinners – Do we support or align ourselves with unbiblical values?

  • Sitting in the company of mockers – What do we watch or engage with when we relax at home?
